SailGP: Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess

Apr

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm - 25/04/2021

The Royal Naval Dockyard is proud to be the Official Venue Partner of the SailGP pre-season training camp and the SailGP Season 2 opening event, the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess, which is scheduled for April 24 & 25, 2021 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm each day (3 races per day). The dynamic league’s second season is set to feature nine events in host nations around the world with eight participating national teams – Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States.

Not only does the Royal Naval Dockyard’s deep-rooted maritime history and culture make this event an obvious fit, but the values of the SailGP organisation—gender equity, inclusion, meaningful social impact and engagement, complemented by the founding belief in honest competition based on hard work and personal development—make it a natural partnership the entire Dockyard community welcomes.

SAILGP DATE CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT (APRIL 22, 2021)
Approaching the opening weekend of SailGP Season 2 – the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess – The championship’s Race Management team has been carefully reviewing the forecast, alongside the league’s Official Weather Provider, AccuWeather.

Saturday, April 24 was confirmed for the opening day of the season’s racing but the wind predictions are for extremely light winds, therefore it is highly unlikely racing can take place on that day.

Friday, April 23 was scheduled to be an official practice day and, in light of Saturday’s forecast, will now become the official opening race day of SailGP Season 2, which counts towards the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix leaderboard and will guarantee a great showcase of both SailGP and the island of Bermuda. Boaters in Bermuda are strongly encouraged to come out and support their teams and Bring Your Own Boat purchased flags will be valid for this day.

Due to our global broadcast agreements, racing on Friday will be pre-recorded and broadcast at SailGP’s allotted broadcast time on Saturday – which is 2pm local in Bermuda via Bermuda Broadcasting Company on ZFB TV7 – and distributed to all of our global broadcast partners, comprising 175 territories worldwide. Broadcast restrictions in these territories mean that SailGP cannot show the live racing on Friday so viewers should tune into the broadcast at the designated time on Saturday to catch the action. SailGP will not be publishing any race results or race content from Friday across its channels.

Racing on Sunday April 25 will be the second race day of the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess.

ABOUT SAILGP
Established in 2018 and head quartered in London and New York, SailGP is an annual, global sports championship featuring cutting-edge technology and athleticism. Rival national teams battle it out at speeds reaching up to 50 knots [about 60 mph] in F50 catamarans that evolved from the foiling vessels first featured during the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017 for the SailGP trophy accompanied by the sport’s largest monetary prize of one million dollars.

“Bermuda is a truly ideal location to open our global championship next year,” said SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts. “It is not only a stunningly beautiful destination with perfect racing conditions, but it also offers a haven for our league to safely resume our calendar amidst the pandemic.

“The island has proven itself as an incredibly capable and welcoming host to major international events and is where the first generation of our F50 catamarans was introduced to the world during the America’s Cup in 2017.

“We look forward to fully engaging with the local community via our Race for the Future purpose-driven actions, and in spending April in Bermuda as we prepare for and launch our second championship season, which is shaping up to be a huge step forward in the world of professional sailing.”
